To mark the second anniversary of Paurl Walsh’s multimedia performance BASCULE II, Obscure & Terrible is proud to release the Seattle Town Hall live concert in its entirety. The concert was the culmination of a year-long residency at Seattle’s Fremont Bridge, which was awarded to Walsh by the city of Seattle’s Office of Arts and Culture. The residency tasked the artist with the unique challenge of composing a musical piece in the northwest tower of one of the country’s most active drawbridges. BASCULE II is the result of the artist’s reflections on the history and importance of the bridge for the city, as well as his own deeply personal relationship with the bridge and the conditions leading to a near death experience in the Fremont neighborhood.
In seeking to break the stigma surrounding the issue of mental health, Walsh uses the mobile and shifting construction of the bridge as a metaphor to address his own struggles with mental illness, homelessness, and substance abuse. As a result, the music is at times very dense and alienating, where the listener is unable to distinguish individual performers and instrumentation from Walsh’s electronic manipulations and distortions. Signifying moments of clarity, the string quartet interludes offer a respite, which provide structural opposition to the synthetic, mind-altering extended passages of BASCULE II. Both elements feed off and, in some ways, are dependent on each other. Here, in the synthesis of the artist’s life and work, is the beauty of BASCULE II, in that disorientation is a necessary opposition to serenity, which gives meaning, perspective and helps constitute the overall structure.
