about

Like a Pacific Northwest combination of Robert Fripp and Rafael Toral, Seattle guitarist/keyboardist Sean Curley has been generating preternaturally beautiful and unusual sounds for over a decade as a solo artist. Deviating slightly from his propulsive work in krautrock/synthwave trio New Weather, Curley's excursions under the Empire State Observatories alias typically evoke dramatic interstellar travel or deepest subaquatic zones. His latest collection of extraordinary ambient tracks, Beneath Truth, was created during the pandemic lockdown and reflects inner turmoil amid grinding isolation and a global health crisis. However, the album represents a classic lemons-into-lemonade scenario, as Curley used this downtime to bring necessary sonic balm into the world. From the opening “Phase Theme”'s majestic tidal motion of tones at once soothing and ominous to “Polyphasic Sleep”'s dark-side-of-Pluto desolation to the MBV-esque blurred grandeur of “Beneath Truth” and “Magnetic Froth,” Curley cocoons the listener in consoling and healing vibrations. Beneath Truth possesses a timelessness that will resonate long after Covid-19 is but a horrible memory.
